Answer engine optimisation, without the snake oil

Half the AEO content on the internet is a rehash of 2019 featured-snippet advice with a new acronym. The other half promises things nobody controls.

Answer engine optimisation, without the snake oil — article cover

Key takeaways

  • AEO is structure work on content that already exists
  • Snippet and citation tracking against a fixed set is honest measurement
  • Nobody can guarantee an AI recommendation — treat that pitch as a warning

Answer engine optimisation is the practice of structuring content so that a machine can extract a clean answer from it. That is genuinely useful work. It is also, in most sales decks, wrapped in claims the vendor cannot substantiate.

What is actually happening

When a query has a clear answer, search engines increasingly surface it above the link. Voice assistants read a single result aloud. AI assistants summarise several sources and cite a few. In all three cases the prize is not the click — it is being the source.

The mechanics are unglamorous: clear question, direct answer, supporting detail, correct markup, and enough evidence that the answer is current and specific.

The structure that wins

  • Answer first. Two sentences that stand alone, before any context or preamble.
  • Then the detail. Numbers, dates, exceptions, definitions — the things that make you quotable.
  • Markup that matches. FAQPage for genuine question-answer pairs, HowTo where steps exist, Article with real dates.
  • One question per page. Pages answering three questions get extracted from badly or not at all.

What you can measure honestly

Snippet ownership for a fixed question set, checked monthly, is measurable. AI citation against a fixed prompt list, with the raw answers saved, is measurable. Assisted conversions from those landing pages are measurable.

What is not measurable: "visibility share across all AI platforms". Any number presented as that is a model output dressed as data.

A test you can run today. Take your five highest-intent questions. Paste each into a search engine and an AI assistant. Note who gets quoted. If it is your competitor every time, you have a content structure problem you can fix this month.

What nobody can promise

You cannot guarantee a featured snippet. You cannot guarantee that ChatGPT recommends you. You cannot guarantee a voice assistant says your name, in the right accent, on the right day. Anyone selling those guarantees is selling you the part they do not control.

What can be promised is eligibility: that your pages are structured so that if an engine chooses to quote somebody, you are a candidate. That is worth paying for. The rest is lottery talk.

Where AEO should sit in your budget

Behind SEO, not instead of it. AEO is a layer of structure applied to content that already exists. If there is no content, there is nothing to structure — and the $500 a month is better spent making one good page.

Structuring existing pages, not writing fifty new ones.
